The barbs, insults and punch lines flew Saturday night at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, but all for a good cause.
More than 400 people and corporations paid $100 a plate at a charity roast in north Scottsdale — not only for the opportunity to poke fun at "America’s toughest sheriff," but also to raise more than $115,000 for abused animals.
The dogs, cats, horses, pigs, donkeys and birds rescued by the sheriff’s office are sheltered in the airconditioned First Avenue Jail and part of Tent City. Inmates care for the animals, but the program relies on donations for veterinary services, food and supplies.
WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT SHERIFF JOE
"He started chain gangs for females so he wouldn’t get sued for discrimination."
-"Sheriff Joe has accomplished a lot. He said he’d get the hookers off Van Buren, and he did. Now they’re on Washington."
-"He sucked all the media attention out of not only the county but the entire state."
