The Town of Gilbert is the only municipality in the nation to be selected for the 2011 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award for its exceptional support of employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. Gilbert is one of 15 recipients - out of 4,049 nominations nationwide by service members or their families - that will receive the award in September in Washington D.C.

According to a news release, the town was nominated by an employee in the Army Reserve who praised the support he received while deployed. The town of Gilbert even made sure that a broken water line in his home was repaired, and routinely checked in on his family. In addition, town employees have formed support groups for service personnel and send care packages to all deployed service members.

"It is a true sign of success when you can be honored for doing the right thing, for those who risk their lives for our freedoms," said Mayor John Lewis, who will travel with a town delegation to the nation's capitol this fall to accept the award.

"This recognition means so much, because we truly are humbled to serve this Town side by side with true community heroes."
