Cornerstone Wesleyan Church is starting a 10-week cancer support and outreach group in Apache Junction - but this isn't going to be your typical support group.
"There are a lot of support groups out there, and everything has its place," said Shary Oden, the group's facilitator. "But this will be a happy time, a learning time, a laughter time."
Cancer patients, survivors and those in their support system are welcome to join the group where they will learn fun and healthy ways to improve their immune system, Oden said. Activities will include things such as raw food preparation and fresh juicing demonstrations as well as music, laughter, nutrition and exercise.
"It takes 21 days to make or break a habit," she said. "The class lasts longer than 21 days and hopefully, the class will teach people new habits in that time."
Oden is a 50-year resident of Apache Junction and has worked as the executive director of an international cancer association and organized local, state, national and international cancer conventions, she said. She became involved after her mother was diagnosed with and survived Stage 4 cancer over 40 years ago.
The program is free, but "love donations" are accepted. To register, or for more information, call Pastor Bob Lenz at (480) 249-9940 or Oden at (480) 982-3065. The first meeting will be 1:30 to 3 p.m. starting February 15 at 201 N. Ironwood Dr., Apache Junction.
