An excessive heat warning has been issued Monday for metropolitan Phoenix and several communities in southern Arizona.
The National Weather Service says the high temperature in the Phoenix area is expected to reach a record-breaking 111 degrees for this day, up from the last record of 110 in 2006.
Warnings also were issued for Tucson, Nogales, Sierra Vista, Safford, Willcox and parts of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
Temperatures are expected to remain roughly the same throughout the week.
Authorities urge people to drink plenty of water, wear hats and light-colored clothing and avoid spending time outside during the peak heat hours of the day.
