Valley high school students can audition next week to be part of a new culinary TV show where they’ll compete against peers in a low-key environment. The East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) will produce FOOD-BALL TV – a cooking show for teens with no cooking experience required. The show is looking for outgoing personalities and students who want to learn from professional chefs.
There will be 48 to 72 students picked for the show, and the season will have 13 episodes with two to three students per episode. Each episode will have two teams of students from different high schools.
Students who attend public, private and charter high schools, as well home schooled and online students, can audition for the competition. EVIT’s student-run radio station, The Pulse 90.7/92.7 FM, will broadcast every audition live, and students can use social media such as Twitter and Instagram throughout the show’s production to engage viewers.
Contestants who make it past the audition stage will compete in FOOD-BALL events in May and June at the culinary arts kitchen at EVIT, with episodes airing next winter on local TV. Those students will vie to win various prizes, including a $1,000 college scholarship.
“We want students to have fun and learn during this experience,” said Radio and Audio Production Instructor Steve Grosz, who is FOOD-BALL TV’s executive producer. He said the show could eventually reach a national audience.
Several of the institute’s programs will be involved in the production of the show, including culinary arts, cosmetology and multimedia.
The auditions will be at Fiesta Mall in Mesa near Radio Shack on March 14 from 3-6 p.m. and at San Tan Village in Gilbert next to Harkin’s Theater on March 15 from 3-6 p.m. Students and their parents must sign a release form if they are under 18.
EVIT is located at 1601 W. Main St. in Mesa. For more information, visit www.foodballshow.com.
