Worth the Trip: Arizona Horseback Experience

We’ve taken a lot of tourist-town trail rides over the years, but our trip with Arizona Horseback Experience marked a significant shift from the usual push-button tour, thanks to a guide and horses that welcomed the chance to lope, rather than plod along, and scenery that made it clear we weren’t in the same-old Sonoran Desert anymore.

The ranch’s popular wine-tasting rides and three-hour rides cross onto the enormous and serene San Ignacio del Babacomari ranch, the largest contiguous private land parcel in Arizona. With hill after hill of waving grasslands, as well as riparian zones and woodlands, it’s the same range Wild West lawman Wyatt Earp rode. Full-day rides and pack trips go deep into the Coronado National Forest; in fact, you can ride from the ranch for five days in one direction before reaching a 9,000-foot elevation in the Huachuca Mountains, where you can peer down on Arizona or Mexico.

Endearing ranch dogs often accompany riders, bounding through the grass alongside the horses, and providing a little trail-side entertainment. [More on next slide ...]
