MINWS 3-17 Jeremiah Custer kidney

Brian Stiff, right, encourages his step-son Jeremiah Custer, 8, to chase his younger sister Zoe Stiff, 21-months old, while their mother Sondra Stiff stands next to her at the family's home in Owensboro, Ky., on March 13, 2014. Jeremiah has has a rare kidney disease called Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, or a scarring of the kidneys that prevents normal function and causes him to become bloated with fluid, among other things, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. There is no known cause or cure. Custer was diagnosed with FSGS in 2009. About 5,000 people are diagnosed with it every year. (AP Photo/The messenger-Inquirer, John Dunham)
