Like many things in life, the difference between a person who serves drinks and a bartender boils down to the little things, at least in the eyes of Hub Grill & Bar bartender Nick Kadlec. In Kadlec’s view, anyone can pour a drink, but it takes more than that to provide a proper bar experience. “The reason I love bartending is I love sitting on the other side of the bar as well,” he said. That’s something the 26-year-old has done in the five years since he turned 21, and he still hits up one bar or another on nights out. The one place he kept returning, though, was the Hub, and it’s a habit that’s continued even though the Hub is the place that doles out his paycheck on a regular basis. Since he’s flipped to the other side of the bar, Kadlec said he’s learned much about the craft. He already enjoyed chatting with people, but it’s those little things, like making eye contact and shaking hands, that make all the difference in the bar experience. And he’s learned all the little tricks from the people around him. “The best tips I learned came from the people who work here,” he said. It’s all combined to create a “Cheers”-like vibe at the Hub, as Kadlec said he not only knows the names of people he serves, but even the cars they drive. Kadlec describes the Hub staff as more of a family than a group of professionals working together. He wants the good times to continue, and his dream job is to keep doing the little things at the bar he’s grown to love. “If my boss could give me my own Hub, I would go with it,” he said.
