There’s no better-known landmark in Gilbert than the 120-foot water tower that anchors downtown’s Water Tower Plaza, a half-acre park with an interactive splash pad that draws kids like a magnet and a curious 19,000-pound granite ball suspended in water. Built in 1927, the tower was used to store water for firefighting. It later stored drinking water. The old-timey jail is near its base.
