A new addition to the animal family at Phoenix Zoo has been named.

A Grevy’s zebra foal born Jan. 19 to parents Masika and Punda has been dubbed Bakari.

On Feb. 6, the zoo held a naming ceremony, in which the newborn zebra’s mother was given the option to choose from three bags of treats, each labeled with a different name for the foal. Masika chose the bag labeled Bakari, meaning “one who will succeed” in Swahili.

The zoo says that Bakari is doing great, and that he enjoys playing with his 3-month-old half brother, Utambo.

To see a video of Bakari’s naming ceremony, or for more information, visit PhoenixZoo.org.
