We have our fair share of Disney animated favorites, but from time to time it’s fun to treat the family to a live theater production of a classic fairy tale. Valley Youth Theatre’s “Rapunzel,” playing Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through March 10, is a great option.

This non-musical version of the timeless story, adapted by Sidney Berger, goes beyond the basics, said VYT artistic director Bobb Cooper.

“Berger’s adaptation of one of the world’s most-famous fairy tales is both humorous and insightful,” Cooper said in a release. “His version suggests that Rapunzel was mistreated by an overprotective guardian who lavished her with material goods, but deprived her of love … a situation not all that uncommon in today’s society.”

The show was originally scheduled to end February 24, but due to popular demand, Valley Youth Theatre extended the run through March 10.

“Part of what’s kept Rapunzel hot has to do with the Disney animated film ‘Tangled’,” Cooper said, “but word-of-mouth about the acting, costumes and scenery are solely responsible for this extension.”
