When it comes to reading the book before you see the movie, we’ll grant it’s easier to get through “Twilight” or “The Hunger Games” than Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables.” The 1862 novel — long required reading in high school courses — is set to hit the big screen around Christmastime, in a highly anticipated new film starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Thankfully, you can skip a refresher reading and see it before you can, well, see it, beginning Sept. 11 at ASU Gammage in Tempe. “Les Mis,” the live musical, will play on Gammage’s stage, complete with scenery inspired by Hugo’s paintings.

The production played to sold-out crowds the last time it came to town, and it gets high marks in our book for the epic story’s staying power. Hugo’s message about the survival of the human spirit can reach you whether you’re 15 or 50, and probably should if it’s one of those classics you’ve never made time to read or see — or simply couldn’t appreciate the first time around.

DETAILS >> Opens 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, and runs daily through Sept. 16. ASU Gammage, 1200 S. Forest Ave., Tempe. $20-$169.10. (480) 965-3434 or ASUGammage.com.
