Wyatt Earp Days
The smell of gunpowder is in the air at this annual celebration hearkening back to the life and times of the Old West’s most famous lawman. Gunfights and skits take place all day on historic Allen Street, where you can expect to feel like you’ve stepped back in time, thanks to enthusiasts dressed in 1880s fashions. Stick around for Sunday’s 1 p.m. chili cookoff, where samples go for around $1 a cup.

Taylor Trapper Days
This tiny mountain town honors its vets, holding a solemn reading of the names on Taylor’s veterans’ memorial — and then it celebrates with a smorgasboard of mostly free activities.
Most unusual are the pit bull canine games, where dogs from the American Breed Preservation Registry compete in weight pulling, tug of war and vertical wall climbing events. There’s also a best beard contest (no entry fee, just show up and take a number) for cash prizes, a slew of American race cars on display, a country music show, and a free cookout at an old cabin, where you can catch a wagon tour of historic sites around town.
DETAILS >> Most events take place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 25 at Taylor Rodeo Park, 202 W. Center St. Free admission. Call or go online for a full schedule and additional locations. (928) 536-7366 or SnowflakeTaylorChamber.org.
