A look at notable numbers as "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth film in the franchise, sets sail:

Movies directed by Gore Verbinski: 3.

Movies directed by Rob Marshall: 1.

Years since initial film: 8.

Domestic gross for first three: Roughly $1 billion.

Foreign gross for first three: Roughly $1.6 billion.

Most successful: Second movie, "Dead Man's Chest," grossed $1,066,179,725, according to Box Office Mojo, with a 60-40 foreign/domestic split.

Oscar nominations for franchise: 11.

Oscar nominations for actors: 1. Johnny Depp, nominated for 2003's "The Curse of the Black Pearl," lost Best Actor statuette to "Mystic River" star Sean Penn.

Oscar wins: 1, for visual effects for 2006's "Dead Man's Chest."

Mermaids in "On Stranger Tides": 8 (with help from 22 synchronized swimmers).

Extras, extras: Open calls in Kauai and Oahu, Hawaii, attracted 7,000 men, many in pirate gear, headscarves, earrings and real tats.

Coconuts removed for new movie: 773 at the shuttered Coco Palms Hotel in Wailua, Hawaii, to prevent them from bonking cast and crew. The low-hanging fruit was shared with locals.
