It’s been 75 years since Dorothy clicked her sparkling ruby heels together and wished to go home, and now you can see her dazzling red kicks and the zany world of Oz like never before.

To mark the anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” — which set a new bar for the use of color and special effects in film — Warner Bros. has produced a remastered version of the 1939 film that will be presented in IMAX 3D format. It will run on the big screen for an exclusive one-week engagement in IMAX theatres across North America beginning Sept. 20.

The Gateway 12 IMAX Theatre in Mesa had not determined whether it would show the film or not by press time, but the Digiplex Surprise Pointe 14 & IMAX, at 13549 N. Litchfield Road in Surprise, will screen the movie multiple times a day through Sept. 26.

The 3D conversion involved high resolution (8k) scanning of the original Technicolor camera negative and creating depth-maps of each frame to construct 3D imagery.

“People have asked for years about The Wizard of Oz 3D conversion. My answer was always, ‘We’re not doing it until it’s perfect.’ And now it is,” said Ned Price, Warner Technical Operations’ Vice President of Mastering in a release. “As a kid, I was so enthralled by this film. Watching it, you just want to enter the frame, enter the Land of Oz. This new version will allow you to do just that.”

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release a limited and numbered “The Wizard of Oz 75th Anniversary Collector’s Edition” on October 1, featuring the 3D version of the film.
