Try these cool treats as summer begins to heat up.

Paletas at Paletas Betty

96 West Boston St., Chandler

(480) 779-8080 or www.paletasbetty.com

Paletas, or Mexican ice and cream pops, are handmade from scratch at this cute little shop, where only fresh fruit (nothing frozen or canned) and fresh-ground spices are used. Flavors change according to what’s available at market and include mango con chile (mango with chile powder), arándano (blueberry lemonade) and platano (bananas foster with homemade caramel and añejo rum). Pops run $2.49-$2.79, and each includes a sticker and a fake bite mark, letting you know it’s passed inspection and is good enough to eat.

Frozen custard at Nielsen’s Frozen Custard

1942 E. Southern Ave., Mesa, (480) 497-2161 or 6671 E. Baseline Ave., Mesa

(480) 497-2161 or (480) 981-6368 or www.gonielsens.com

Heavier and with less air content than ice cream, some say frozen custard has a richer taste and smoother texture than ice cream.

Neilsen’s makes its custards fresh daily and serves them at 26 degrees — about 16 degrees warmer than traditional ice cream — to allow your taste buds “to get a true taste,” instead of going numb, according to the company.

You can get your custard plain, in a cup or cone, starting from $1.86, or choose a “Concrete.” The $4.78 mixture is the stores’ most popular item and includes one of nearly 50 optional toppings, flavorings and mix-ins.

Oatmeal stout shake at Four Peaks Brewing Company

1340 E. Eighth St., Tempe

(480) 303-9967 or www.fourpeaks.com

Forget kids’ treats. At this Tempe brew pub, you can belly up to the bar for milkshake made for grown-ups. Vanilla bean ice cream is mixed with velvety-black beer in Four Peaks’ Oatmeal Stout Shake. The $6 treat is marbled with streaks of chocolate, topped with a mountain of whipped cream and dusted with extra-fine Oreo cookie crumbs.
