You wouldn’t know it from all the parking lots and shopping centers in our immediate vicinity, but out on the fringe of suburbia, acres of peaches are growing fat and juicy in the warm spring sunshine.
The fruit is front and center at the annual Schnepf Farms Peach Festival, where the chief activity is hopping aboard a hayride to the orchards and picking peaches to your heart’s content.
But don’t fill up sampling fruit straight off the tree, because eating is another highlight at the event. A popular Peachy Pancake Breakfast is served until 2 p.m. from large outdoor griddles heated over mesquite charcoal. The $6-$10 fee includes pancakes, sausage, sliced peaches and whipped cream, and juice, coffee or milk.
There’s also a sampling tent filled with peach-themed jams, salsas, candies and other foods, and the farm’s Country Store & Bakery sells peach pies and peach cinnamon rolls. Burgers, hot dogs, brats, sandwiches and salads are available from the farm restaurant.
Pit-spitting and pie eating contests start at 11 a.m. each day by the festival stage, and rides are open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A $10 wristband buys unlimited turns, or pay $3 per ride.
