If the excess of the holidays left you with a strong desire to purge, simplify or de-clutter in the new year, you can find a little motivation for your cause in “Green Revolution.”

Centered around an eco-friendly, green-themed Smithsonian Institution exhibition on environmental issues concerning the local community now open at The Gallery at Tempe Center for the Arts, the “Revolution” offers a smorgasbord of fun activities in the coming weeks and months for kids and adults.

From appearances by local artists Kathy Cano-Murillo (of Crafty Chica fame) and Christy Puetz to workshops on turning old books into furniture and purses now that you’ve got an e-reader, the sessions are designed to engage us in thinking about — and acting upon — our “go green” inclinations.

Other highlights include a free outdoor movie screening of “Bag It,” an award-winning documentary about plastic bags, and an April 20 Earth day celebration, both at Tempe Public Library. A full schedule is available online.

The free “Green Revolution” art exhibition at TCA is based on a show originally created by the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and its Black Creativity Council.

DETAILS >> Exhibition is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Pkwy. Free. Info on all the supplemental events is available by phone or web at (480) 350-2822 or
