When you think of Native American art, pottery and textiles may come to mind. You may not be so quick to picture art made on the lined sheets of ledger paper.
That’s what’s on display in “Stories Outside the Lines: American Indian Ledger Art,” a new exhibit opening Dec. 15 at Heard Museum North Scottsdale.
As Indians were moved onto reservations and the buffalo were destroyed, the stories indigenous Americans once depicted using mineral paints on buffalo hide changed to pencil and crayon drawings inside ledger books, which were brought to the Plains by record-keeping settlers.
Artist Dallin Maybee (Seneca/Arapaho), who continues the tradition, will discuss his work at 1 p.m. Dec. 15.
The exhibit opens at 10 a.m. at the museum, 32633 N. Scottsdale Road. Admission is $5 adults, $4 seniors 65 and older, $2 students with ID and children ages 6-12. Admission is free for children 5 and younger and American Indians.
