Long weekends were made for leisurely hours spent on pleasures we’re normally too busy to enjoy, like ditching the usual mad dash to the grocery store in favor of a more laid-back food-finding experience.

Gilbert Farmers Market is open over the holiday weekend with a critter-packed petting zoo, live music from acoustic artist Jesse French, and organic breakfast served hot out of vintage food truck The Uprooted Kitchen.

Seven farmers will offer farm-fresh produce, and samples are available from vendors selling everything from lamb, chicken, rabbit and grass-fed beef to raw goat’s milk cheeses, wheat grass and drink rimmers — flavorful salt and sugar blends to liven up the rims of your drinking glasses.

With a free splash pad located steps away under Gilbert’s Water Tower, and water bowls placed around the market for leashed pets, it’s an outing the entire family can get in on.

DETAILS >> 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 at 222 N. Ash Drive in downtown Gilbert. Free admission. About 75 percent of vendors accept credit/debit cards, but bring some cash, too, for market purchases.
