Superstition Arts & Cultural Alliance (SACA) and Dreams and Legends Gallery have announced their selection of Joe Yarina as November's Superstition Artist of the Month.
A longtime resident of Apache Junction, Joe Yarina is an accomplished artist who has worked in many media, including water colors and crayons, acrylics, oils, pencil, ink, pastels and wood carving. For over 25 years now, he has built museum quality ships in bottles the old way the ancient mariner's did.
Creating each ship is a detailed work of art that requires from 40 to 80 hours to complete. Every ship is a uniquely finished piece of artwork and every detail is faithful to the original ship upon which the model is based. To authenticate his creations, he uses blueprints from the Smithsonian or from historical nautical sources. Ships are built to scale, shown in the bottle that best displays the beauty of them in the wind-tossed or in becalmed seas. Joe's ships are very detailed, museum quality models, placed in just the right bottle and come complete with a handmade hardwood stand, and finished off with a Turk's head knot. Each ship has a history with the artist's watermark in the background, an art ID number located on the cork or stopper with his signature, and care instructions. Always an artist, Joe has endeavored to work at capturing a moment in history, with the purpose of bringing people together so they can begin to understand each other.
Joe is an active member of SIBAA (Ships-in- bottles Association of America) since 2010 and has published several articles the Journal of the Ships-in-Bottles Association of America.
As the Artist of the Month, a selection of Joe's ship-in-bottles will be on exhibit at the Dreams and Legends of the Superstitions Gallery, located at 2260 N. Apache Trail / Highway 88, Apache Junction. Owners Ernest and Janice Imbeau invite the public to visit their website at www.dreamsandlegendsart.com for directions to their gallery and open hours.
