There’s a new place to shop for original gifts in the East Valley, and it’s only going to be open about three weeks.

The Black Bird Holiday Exhibition and Bazaar offers affordable work from 17 Arizona artists through Jan. 4, 2014, at the Gallery at Tempe Center for the Arts.

“It’s a completely new thing,” says gallery coordinator Michelle Dock. “Half of the gallery is set up as exhibition space and will show some of the artists’ latest work, and the other half is a holiday shopping gallery full of smaller items also handmade by the artists. Nearly everything is for sale.”

The selection includes paintings on pieces of the old Tempe Town Lake rubber dam and five articulated mannequins that have been painted, drawn on or embellished with found objects and decorative materials.

Other pieces include intricate wood boxes, jewelry, picture frames and glasswork. Prices range from $20 to $200 for bazaar items. Exhibition art prices are higher.

Black Bird got its name from the Gallery’s youth arts education mascot, Questor, a black bird designed by artist Barbara Burton. For six years, Questor has helped teach the arts to students throughout Arizona and the United States via online curriculum and workshops the Gallery offers in conjunction with nearly all of its exhibitions, says Dock.
