Wild desert tortoises are rare enough to spot around these parts. Finding a box turtle with a gorgeous, flowering garden on her shell? That’s a long shot, unless you or your child happen to flip through the pages of “Mossy,” by Jan Brett.

The popular children’s author and illustrator will pull into Gilbert on Oct. 17 in a giant bus covered with colorful images of the turf-topped turtle, the star of Brett’s latest book.

Brett will give a talk and sign “Mossy” at the warehouse of family owned A+ Book Fairs. Admission is free. The book, as well as other Brett titles, will be on hand for purchase.

Brett says on her website that she got the idea for Mossy’s story when she saw a giant snapping turtle with underwater plants growing on its shell surface in a lake.

“Mossy,” released in late September, debuted at No. 3 on the New York Times best-seller list for Children’s Picture Books.

DETAILS >> 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17. A+ Book Fairs, 45 N. Sunway Drive, Gilbert. Free admission; “Mossy” ($17.99) and other Brett titles will be available for purchase. (480) 632-0440 or JanBrett.com.
