From funnel cakes and fun house mirrors to chainsaw carving challenges and the crashing, colliding cars of the Figure 8 Races, we love the Arizona State Fair.

No place else is quite so bizarre yet so suitable for all tastes and ages at once.

Seriously, where else can you admire hundreds of colorful, free-flying butterflies — while you munch on their chocolate-coated kin, sold from an edible insect vendor just a few aisles over?

Or how about ziplining over a crowd of zombies dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” watching fiercely smart dogs compete in the Arizona State Police K-9 Competition, or joining in live arm wrestling?

New attractions this year include Behemoth Bugland, an animatronic attraction for kids that puts the hidden world of insects in giant perspective, and the AZ 100 Flag tour, a chance for kids to help build a giant Arizona state flag from thousands of LEGO bricks.

But we’re biggest fans of a new discount for 2012: Arrive before 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and you’ll pay just $2 per person to get in.

That means we have more money for reserved seating at concerts by the likes of Weezer, Korn, Jane’s Addiction, Nas, Billy Currington and Adam Lambert, or to simply play games, hop on rides, and sample that famous fair food.

For descriptions of all attractions, a schedule of events, and ways to save daily on admission, go to AZStateFair.com.

DETAILS >> Opens at noon Oct. 12. After that, gates open at noon Wednesdays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays, through Nov. 4. Arizona State Fairgrounds, 1826 W. McDowell Road, Phoenix. $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 5-13 and seniors age 55 and older. (602) 252-6771 or AZStateFair.com.
