When you mark your calendar with art events in December, save room for art events in Apache Junction. That's right, Apache Junction, that quaint little collection of trailer parks and retirement communities nestled in the shadows of the majestic Superstition Mountains. AJ is perhaps Arizona's best kept secret when it comes to art and art related events.
Start the month off by visiting the renowned Superstition Mountain Museum at 4087 N. Apache Trail. On December 1st, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., local artists will be showing and selling their arts and crafts on the museum patio and out on the grounds.
Immediately following the Artists on the Patio, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the museum will be hosting a special concert by the Celestial Misfits, a duo that plays acoustic favorites ranging from blues to rock with their distinctive hybrid flamenco guitar and southwestern flute. Their repertoire includes songs by Bob Dylan, the Eagles, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison and Stevie Wonder.
Visit the museum's website at http://superstitionmountainmuseum.org/events/categories/special-events/ for directions and more information.
Beginning December 1st, you can see the fabulous paintings of Chris Morningforest, the SACA December Superstition Artist of the Month, at Dreams and Legends Gallery on 2260 N Apache Trail / Highway 88.
Chris has been painting since she was a child. As is fitting for one who has spent much her adult life in New Mexico and Arizona, Chris's work has a distinctly Southwestern flavor. A long-time resident of Apache Junction, Chris is an accomplished artist who works in many medias and is constantly striving to find new ways to express her spiritually in ways that invite viewers of her work to join her. Chris says of her work, "I like to create artwork which you can participate in. As you look at what I do, you add yourself to it and it expands beyond that which first created. I bring the magic of the world to you in very special ways."
Dreams and Legends Gallery also offers for sale a selection of fabulous artwork by other local artists. Go to http://www.dreamsandlegendsart.com/ for directions and hours to this neat little gallery.
While you're in Apache Junction, check out East Side Art Studio, an historic East Valley artist community homesteaded in the 1930s by visionary artist Benhardt Michelson and expanded in the '60s by artist Katherine Leegate. The studio is currently the contemporary figurative oil paintings of Joel Coplin and the figurative scultures of Jo-Ann Lowney.
