Sprinkles Cupcakes, the bakery some credit as “the progenitor of the haute cupcake craze,” is giving kids a chance to get in on the cake-in-a-cup trend. Candace’s Cupcake Challenge — named for Sprinkles founder Candace Nelson — calls on elementary schoolers throughout Maricopa County to submit cupcake recipes to the Scottsdale bakery.
Classrooms may submit their cake and frosting recipes to Sprinkles by Friday, Feb. 7. Nelson, who’s also a judge on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” will then select her three favorite recipes. They will be baked and sold Feb. 24-28 at Sprinkles Scottsdale.
Valley residents will “vote” for their favorite flavor by purchasing the cupcakes at Sprinkles, 4501 N. Scottsdale Road. The top-selling cupcake will receive a $1,000 cash donation to the school and a cupcake party for the entire school. Second and third place cupcakes will each receive a cupcake party for the submitting classroom and cash donations to the school for $500 and $250, respectively.
