Mmmm, empanadas. If they sound good to you, you might be pleased to learn about Republica Empanada, a new restaurant opening in downtown Mesa.

A pan-Latin bistro with mid-century architecture that specializes in South American-style empanadas, it will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays, beginning Monday, June 24, at 204 E. First Ave.

On the menu are appetizers ($4.99) like cassava fries and green plantains, savory empanadas (less than $3 each) stuffed with everything from slow-roasted pork and achiote potatoes to sautéed spinach, feta and kalamata olives, and spicy buffalo chicken and gorgonzola cheese. Dessert empanadas (up to $3.25) come in combinations from fig, cheese and caramel to Nutella and banana.

For information, call (480) 969-1343 or visit RepublicaEmpanada.com.
