Rise and shine, Mesa breakfast lovers; you’ll soon have a new place for your first meal of the day.
Sunnyside Breakfast Lounge is set for tentative opening on Aug. 30. It will be open 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily in the space left empty by The Egg & I Cafe at Power and McDowell roads.
“The menu is breakfast and lunch, so eggs benedict, omelets, oatmeal, salads, sandwiches, burgers, a kids’ menu,” says executive chef Gabriel Garfio. “But the thing we’re really big on is our use of lots of fresh fruit and natural squeezed juices as well — orange juice, tomato juice, apple juice, and a lot of combination juices that are very health-conscious, and coffee drinks, too.”
The restaurant’s interior has been repainted in soft colors that evoke cantaloupe, celery and lemons. A large mural by artist Esen Kaya shows a chef picking produce in a verdant field, with a likeness of neighborhood landmark Red Mountain, a.k.a. Mt. McDowell, rising in the background.
A bar has been added to the space, where customers can dine (and watch as an extractor machine juices oranges), and the restaurant has applied for a liquor license. It will seat 125 indoors and 40 on a covered patio. A bike rack has been installed outside.
Garfio’s family owns two other restaurants in Mesa: Frutilandia at Gilbert and Broadway roads and the two-in-one Frutilandia/Habañero’s Mexican Food combination restaurant inside Superstition Springs Mall.
Garfio says the family was first attracted to the empty Egg & I building when his girlfriend, who works in the same shopping center, mentioned that the space had been vacated. The family then designed a restaurant they thought would suit nearby residents.
Garfio will be joined by general manager Vincent Romo and director of operations Jorge Ber. They plan to offer catering, too.
Sunnyside Breakfast Lounge will be the latest change for The Village at Las Sendas shopping center, where Breadsmith bakery closed last month and Fox Cigars and Pacino’s restaurant opened earlier in the summer. It’s at 2823 N. Power Road, Mesa.
