We can’t deny it any longer — hot temperatures are here to stay. Fend them off with a syrup-soaked fluff ball of shaved ice.

Mekele Shave Ice

1835 E. Lockwood St., Mesa

(602) 872-3223 or Facebook.com/MekeleShaveIce

Created and served by a local teenager, Mekele’s frozen treats come in more than 30 flavors, some of them fairly uncommon (think French vanilla, honeydew, guava, pomegranate, cinnamon and horchata) and can be served with cream or ice cream. Open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays off the beaten track in a Mesa neighborhood, servings cost $1-$4. But check the Facebook page often, as hours can vary.

Tropical Sno Hawaiian Shave Ice

6754 E. Main St., Mesa

This teensy blue booth is an outpost of refreshment in the searing Apache Square strip mall parking lot. Snow cones, in flavors from fuzzy navel and tiger’s blood to rootbeer and cotton candy, cost $3 to $4. Vanilla, chocolate and sour toppings cost 25 cents to 50 cents more.

Bahama Buck’s Original Shaved Ice Company

303 E. Southern Ave., No. 101, Mesa, (480) 898-3036

2235 S. Power Road, No. 111, Mesa, (480) 654-0079

1959 S. Signal Butte Road, No. 103, Mesa (480) 354-1509

1006 E. Warner Road, No. 101, Tempe (480) 777-9482

You’ve got to hand it to a place that serves pickle juice over shaved ice and wins fans. Ever-bold Bahama Buck’s (“Eat Yellow Snow” is a longtime slogan for franchise merchandise) does just that, along with offering a dizzying array of other flavors — several in calorie-free Stevia-sweetened versions. The island-themed stores also sell smoothies, lemon- and limeades, iced coffee drinks and, perhaps the best idea ever, Sno2Throw.

Each store sets its own prices, but expect to pay around $2.65 for a “baby” snow cone and $5.99 for an “avalanche” size. Add-ins range from about 60 cents to $1.40.
