There is some exciting news for northeast Mesa. Smashburger has opened at 2837 N. Power Road.

If you are not familiar with Smashburger, it is an awesome place to get not only hamburgers, but chicken sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, veggie burgers and more. Their shakes and floats are a special treat, since Smashburger uses Hagen-Dazs ice cream.

I first visited Smashburger at the Desert Ridge location several months ago, and their burger was one of the best I’ve eaten. It was moist and juicy, but that is not a surprise since Smashburger uses an 80/20 mix of 100 percent Angus beef for their burgers. Using a mix of 80 percent meat to 20 percent fat is considered the perfect mix for a moist and juicy burger.

So what makes Smashburger different — besides the fact that they use Angus beef? The hamburger searing process is what puts the “smash” in Smashburger. This cooking process seals in the flavor of the beef and creates a pleasingly crisp and crusty outer layer.

Each burger can be customized with any of nine add-ons to further personalize your meal. They also offer the choice of four different artisan buns.

If burgers are not your thing, they also offer four salads. Since everything is made fresh to order, all are customizable to meet your tastes. You can also order salads with grilled or crispy chicken.

While Smashburger is a fast food restaurant, their décor is more upscale than one would expect, including cushioned booths and carpeted dining areas.

One other nice thing to note is that police officers, firefighters and military personnel get a 25 percent discount on their meal.
