Baxter Black won’t let himself be described as America’s best-loved cowboy poet, according to a write-up on Changing Hands Bookstore’s website, but he’s OK with being called the country’s tallest, scrawniest, most left-handed one.
The Arizona resident with a syndicated column in more than 100 newspapers will read from and sign his latest book, “Lessons From A Desperado Poet,” Thursday at the book shop. He’ll also hold a question-and-answer session.
Part memoir and part how-to, the book is a witty take on making a living by doing the right thing and trying everything — something Black, a former large-animal veterinarian, has experience in; he’s performed cowboy poetry across the United States and Canada, been a commentator for NPR and authored numerous books.
Tickets to the event are free with the purchase of one of Black’s books. Tickets will be called alphabetically to fill seats beginning at 6 p.m. If available, extra seating and standing room opens to those without tickets at 6:45 p.m. If space runs out, you can still meet Black and get your book signed at a meet-and-greet after the reading.
