Father’s Day. The cliches surrounding it are almost as famous as the holiday itself. But here are some local events that should be fun if you’re a dad, looking for something to do with your dad, or just wanting to leave the house this weekend.

Father’s Day. The cliches surrounding it are almost as famous as the holiday itself. But here are some local events that should be fun if you’re a dad, looking for something to do with your dad, or just wanting to leave the house this weekend. Best of all? Nothing to do with golf paraphernalia.

POOL PARTY

Usually at restaurants or museums, the deal is “kids get in free.” Not this weekend at the Kiwanis Recreation Center Wave Pool in Tempe, where fathers get in free with a paid $3 youth admission. Finally, father and child can splash around the pool’s 3-foot waves and shoot down the water slide for just a few bucks. Also in the offering: goodie bags and a raffle.

>> Father’s Day Wave Pool Theme Weekend takes place 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Kiwanis Recreation Center Wave Pool, 6111 S. All-America Way, Tempe. Information: (480) 350-5201 or tempe.gov/pools/kiwaniswavepool.

McCullough-Price House in Chandler, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders

GAME DAY

For many fathers, the nascent days of Space Invaders, Pac-Man or Donkey Kong were the last time they really played any video games. This weekend, nostalgic fans can head to McCullough-Price House in Chandler and check out the opening of “ZAP! Vintage Video Games,” a celebration of 1980s video games running through September. This Saturday, professionals from local game design firm Rainbow Studios will be on hand, along with refreshments from California Pizza Kitchen and (gasp!) modern video games provided by mobile gaming company The Game Truck.

>> The “ZAP! Vintage Video Games” opening takes place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at McCullough-Price House, 300 S. Chandler Village Drive. Free. Information: (480) 782-2876 or chandleraz.gov/pricehouse.

Chandler Fashion Center, Hot Dog On A Stick

FREE FOOD

Fathers love a bargain. It’s science fact. So if you’re at Chandler Fashion Center tonight searching for the perfect gift, why not save some dough and treat papa to something free? It’s Free Hot Dog Day at Hot Dog on a Stick in the mall food court, where each customer — new and grizzled corn dog veterans alike — is entitled to one free hot dog (on a stick, naturally).

>> Free Hot Dog Day takes place 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hot Dog on a Stick in the Chandler Fashion Center food court, Chandler Boulevard and Loop 101. Information: (480) 812-8488 or chandlermall.com.
