The laid-back pace of a holiday weekend means you can finally slow down, reconnect, and maybe even fit in a visit to someplace you rarely make time for in a usual week.

Take McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, for example. Long considered a top destination for families with children, it’s hosting a free concert Sunday.

Sapphire Sky, a band that plays a variety of hits and promises a dance floor, will perform on what could be our last “cool” weekend for awhile. Sunday’s high is forecast around 91 degrees; it’ll no doubt be cooler by the time evening rolls around.

Aside from the music, you’ll find rides aboard a scaled-down reproduction of a Colorado narrow gauge railroad and a restored antique carousel. Add to that railroad displays and artifacts, model railroad exhibits, a snack shop that operates out of an old Southern Pacific Railroad caboose, and plenty of room for kids to roam — from grassy areas to playgrounds with slides, ladders, towers and swings.

Blankets and folding chairs are welcome at the concert.

DETAILS >> 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, 7301 E. Indian Bend Road, Scottsdale. Free admission. Rides cost $2 per person; children younger than 3 ride free with a paying adult. (480) 312-2312 or www.therailroadpark.com.
