"American Idol" is back, and not just on your TV set every Tuesday night. Former top-ten contestant Chris Sligh will headline an outdoor concert 11 a.m. Feb. 28 at Grace Community Christian School, 1200 E. Southern Ave., Tempe.
The concert, billed as a family event, will feature bounce houses, raffle prizes and lunch available for purchase from Honey Bear BBQ.
A fan favorite from the sixth season, portly Sligh is best remembered for his signature corkscrew curls, black-rimmed glasses and quick wit, though he did stand out for standing up to notoriously acerbic judge Simon Cowell. A clip of the exchange still gets hits on YouTube.com.
"Here Comes Goodbye," a song that Sligh co-wrote, was recently picked up by country band Rascal Flatts; it will appear on the band's new album, "Unstoppable," scheduled for release in Spring 2009. The song is slated to start playing on country radio stations the week of Jan. 26.
Sligh's song "Empty Me," from his 2008 debut album "Running Back to You," has received play on Christian radio stations nationwide. His Tempe concert will feature songs from that album.
Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased online at gccsaz.com, or by visiting Amazing Grace bookstore, 8830 S. Kyrene Road, Tempe, or the school office. Tickets will be available at the concert for $20. Children age 5 and younger get in free.
