Getting through the holidays may not be easy, but it’s possible. Tammy Baker, a registered dietitian with the Dairy Council of Arizona, has a few simple tips.
First, save the calories for the main event. In other words, you can easily drink 500 calories in one holiday cocktail or eat 1,000 calories worth of appetizers. Save your calories for the good stuff and don’t waste them.
Second, make the calories you do splurge on count. "If you want to have pumpkin pie, then do it!" she says. "But it’s a trade-off. Skip snacking on nuts. You can have nuts anytime."
My workout partner, Mack Newton, has a different approach. Use your head. Visualization is the key. See yourself as trim and fit. Tell yourself that you will make the right choices and your subconscious mind will do it for you. It’s a different approach, but if you do everything I’m suggesting, you are bound to at least maintain your current weight and enjoy the holidays as well. After all, you do want to fit into a holiday outfit, don’t you?
