Scottsdale is known for its fashion sense. And that includes even its littlest residents.

At the first Divas and Dogs on Fifth Avenue pet parade and fashion show on Saturday, all types of canines, from bichons to Chihuahuas, were decked out in their four-legged finest, strutting down the paw-printed red carpet for all to see.

"I thought it would be a great idea," said co-host Hilda Bourdamis, owner of Classy Jazzy, an upscale pet boutique at 7111 E. Fifth Ave. in downtown Scottsdale. "It's something new, and people are always thirsty for something new."

Bourdamis said she was approached by John Little, Scottsdale's acting city manager, a month ago about the idea. Little, one of the event's judges, said a dog fashion show was a natural fit for downtown.

"It's a perfect event to highlight the family nature of downtown," he said.

For the pet owners, Divas and Dogs was an opportunity to show off their pride and joy.

"In Scottsdale they love their dogs and like to pamper them, maybe more than they pamper themselves," said Bourdamis, who owns a 2-year-old white bichon frise named Jazzy.

Bourdamis said Jazzy is the inspiration behind her store, which sells dog clothing and accessories ranging from rock 'n' roll denim looks with skull motifs to dainty pink summer frocks trimmed with lace.

Stephanie Guerra-Wesenhagen, 38, of Scottsdale said it's fun to dress up her 2-year-old black-and-white Shih Tzu-poodle named Zorra.

"She is a diva dog," Guerra-Wesenhagen said. "She likes to be pretty."

Zorra wore a cherry-patterned black, white and red dress on the runway to match Guerra-Wesenhagen's cherry-patterned halter dress.

So who was top dog when it came to fashion?

That honor went to 5-month-old Rocky, a tan Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix who beat out 34 other competitors as he trotted and sometimes slid across the runway wearing a bright orange sporty sweat jacket with matching dog booties.

Rocky's owner, Donny Hosenfeld, 31, a physical therapist from Phoenix, was thrilled as he held Rocky's prizes that included gift certificates for Louis Vuitton and Scottsdale pet salon Grooming Tails.

"He always gets a lot of attention wherever we go," Hosenfeld said as he gave Rocky a victory hug.
