“We look like a painters’ convention,” Bob Sharkey of Leisure World told Tribune photographer Ralph Freso as the Mesa retirement community’s lawn bowling club, all dressed in white, hosted rivals from Venture Out for a match.

Four East Valley lawn bowling clubs (others are Monte Vista and Silveridge) alternate visitation matches like this one “just for the fun of it” year-round. During the summer months the games are played at night under the lights.

Players take a course to learn the rules and become certified; both Leisure World and Venture Out have more than 70 players each.
