It’s been two years since Rene Foss brought her one-woman comedy, “Around the World in a Bad Mood: Confessions of a Flight Attendant,” to the Mesa Arts Center, where it proved an extended-run hit.

Not much has changed between then and now, as Foss tonight returns for a 10-day layover at the MAC.

Airline industry still shaky. Oil prices still high. Check-in a chore? You betcha. Ditto the disgruntled passengers.

And when she’s not on stage, Foss is still plugging away at a 23-year career as a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines.

“I’m just going to fall over dead on the beverage cart,” she says. “I’ve decided.”

Well, not everything’s the same. Foss is still finding fresh fuel for her comic romp through the less-then-friendly skies. In addition to bits like a mock-safety preparation re-enactment and a “Macbeth”-ish puppet show using barf bags, expect the actress to touch on more topical stuff.

Like — how could she not? — the airport bathroom travails of Idaho Republican Sen. Larry Craig.

“I’m getting a lot of mileage out of that,” she says.

Maybe Foss will also dish about the Christmas party, last month, at which she performed for flight attendants and pilots at Andrews Air Force Base: She took a tour of Air Force Two, the plane that transports Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. (“I tried to get some dirt about them,” Foss says, though she adds the staff was “pretty tight-lipped.”)

If anything, expect this: Foss’ audiences in Mesa will be filled — just as they were two years ago — with plenty of people from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Though the show aims to give passengers a peek behind the scenes, it also tends to be a therapeutic experience for airline industry folks.

“I was just out here on a layover,” says Foss, “and I took a bunch of fliers and was handing them out at the airport. This was after I’d worked a 10-hour day, and I’m like, 'There’s a flight attendant! Stop the car!’

“I’m my biggest promoter.”
