East Valley Senior Services in Mesa is encouraging people ages 50 and up to register for AARP’s free 10-week walking program, beginning Nov. 1.
The free program is a part of a broader AARP goal to help prevent illness and keep people healthy through positive changes to personal behaviors, such as more exercise and better diet.
“Walking is one of the easiest ways to get in shape,” AARP Arizona state director David Mitchell said in a press release. “You just need a pair of comfortable shoes and a little motivation to get out there and start moving.”
The walking program helps people find safe places to walk and provides tools to help people stick with their exercise plans. Each participant will receive a free step-counter and guidebook, and will be invited to sign up for a walking group and weekly educational sessions on fitness and nutrition.
The kick-off event for the 10-week program will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Red Mountain Senior Center, 7550 E. Adobe Street in Mesa.
