Illusionist David Copperfield is making a stop in the East Valley, and he plans to do far more for audiences than pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Tickets go on sale Jan. 12 for two shows Feb. 20 and 21 at Gammage Auditorium in Tempe.

Called "An Intimate Evening of Grand Illusion," the performances will include Copperfield's attempts to walk through the rotating blades of a giant industrial fan; handle a dangerous black scorpion; float through solid steel; squeeze his body down to shoebox size; and make random audience members vanish and reappear. The magician, named the 10th-highest-paid celebrity in the world by Forbes magazine in 2003, is well known for illusions such as walking through the Great Wall of China, making the Statue of Liberty disappear and escaping from a flaming raft over Niagara Falls.

Tickets for his shows in Tempe cost $19.25-$52.50 and will be available through the Gammage Box Office at (480) 965-3434 or Ticketmaster at (480) 784-4444.
