I’m not one to find myself looking for a place to just hang out very often. But I recently found myself with some precious time to kill. At the advice of a friend, I discovered the coolest coffee bar in town: Lux Coffee Bar, on Central Avenue across from Central High School.

If you’re into espresso, you’ll love it here, since Lux roasts its own beans. If you’re into lattes, you’ll be surprised how beautiful they are — yes, you read me right. The staff likes to get creative with the milk. Look before you sip, because you might find a heart or leaf decorated in foam!

Go hungry, because the pastry chef is a madwoman. You’ll hit your sweet tooth hard with homemade delights — tarts with fresh berries, scones or brownies. The goodies are affectionately called "Paloma pastries," named after the owner’s daughter.

While there, check out the art because the Lux loves local artists and proudly features a local artist’s work every month. It’s small, quaint and reminds me of what coffeehouses were like before big chains took over. I liked it so much that I now make time to kill.

Lux Coffee Bar, 4404 N. Central Ave., is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Information: (602) 266-6469.

On this week’s episode of "On the Go With Terri O," 11 a.m. Saturday on KSAZ-TV (Channel 3): Lamps are not just for light anymore — they’re for decorating, too! Also, check out the latest in home gadgets that save time and trouble.
