The Fourth Annual Gilbert Hospital TOPS program is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at Mesquite High School in Gilbert. TOPS, which stands for Team of Physicians for Students, will see more than 1,200 high school athletes. The Gilbert Hospital TOPS program works to promote the well-being of high school athletes by providing free athletic screenings, including EKGs and cardiac ultrasounds (if needed). These screenings fulfill the Arizona Interscholastic Association physical examination requirement for all high school student athletes. Gilbert Hospital TOPS athletic screening is among the most extensive screenings available to student athletes in the United States. Last year at TOPS, four student athletes who had no prior knowledge of their heart condition were diagnosed Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a common congenital heart disorder (affecting almost 1 in 500 people) that causes heart problems and is a leading cause of death in young athletes. Parents are encouraged to contact their son or daughter's high school to check if they're participating in this year's program. Appointments are scheduled by schools, not individual students. If your son or daughter's school is not participating, contact Debbi Madvig at (480) 840-3733 or dmadvig@gilberter.com.
