Mountain Vista Medical Center is hosting its inaugural Diabetes Fair on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, from 9 a.m. to noon, featuring informational booths about diabetes and diabetes-related conditions. The staff at Mountain Vista recognizes the grand-scale affects that diabetes has on many people in the community and wants to assist them by providing educational tools, screenings and information related to the prevention and management of this disease — the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
Health booth include many resources, such as cholesterol and blood glucose checks, cardiac and stroke risk assessments, foot and vision exams, and nutritional information, including diabetes-friendly food demonstrations. In addition, pharmaceutical and medical device companies that provide diabetes products will be on hand to provide additional information.
The American Diabetes Association estimates that 18.8 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, a majority being type 2. It is also estimated that 79 million Americans have “prediabetes,” meaning that they are at high-risk of developing the disease. If left untreated, those with prediabetes are likely to develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years.
