Though it was his plan all along, Poston Butte football coach Mike De La Torre officially stepped down as the school's football coach early this week.

Dating back to last spring, De La Torre said it was likely his last season coaching. He's an assistant principal at the school, and doing both jobs became increasingly difficult.

"I want to see if we can build the program from the administration side," he said. "Doing both, it wasn’t going to work moving forward. It was a lot of time this year and it’s possible, but being there earlier and extra events you’re doing (as assistant principal), I probably could a couple more years but, consistently it’s so much time."

De La Torre was 22-19 in his four years at Poston Butte, where he helped open the school as an administrator, and football and track coach. The Broncos were 3-7 this season, the school's first after being bumped up to Division II (the Broncos' appeal to move back down to Div. III was denied).

De La Torre also worked as an assistant at three Valley schools before starting the Poston Butte program.

His father, current Dobson coach George De La Torre, also took a year off from coaching recently before returning, and Mike De La Torre said it was a possibility in the future.

The Broncos have already posted the opening for a new football on the AIA website, and while De La Torre said he won't have input into the next coaching hire, believes the school would like to hire one by late December.
