Parents and family greeted Tempe's Corona del Sol High School’s Competition Government Team at the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport this week after it returned home from a sixth-place finish at the national We the People competition in Washington D.C.

The team spent three days competing against 56 other teams from around the country. Corona del High School students participated in simulated congressional hearings on the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. The championship round was held Monday morning on Capitol Hill in the congressional hearing rooms.

This year’s team of 30 students was led by their instructor, Tim Smith, coaches Justine Centanni, Lisa Adams, Ali Rund, Eric Ladue, Cheryl Jannuzzi, Teresa Hodge, and Art Garbosky, as well as countless alumni who helped the team fine-tune speeches and prepare for the national competition. Corona del Sol has won the state championship four out of the last five years.
