Owners of golf carts and other “neighborhood electric vehicles” in Sun City will be able to drive them on the edge of the road under the terms of legislation signed Tuesday by Gov. Jan Brewer.
Existing law requires these vehicles to conform to the same rules as other cars and trucks. But some motorists trying to avoid tying up traffic behind them have driven the paved shoulder, to the right of the white line.
This new measure, which takes effect later this year, ends the threat of being ticketed by sheriff's deputies. It also means someone in another vehicle can legally go around a slower-moving golf cart in the same traffic lane.
The law may not apply much beyond Sun City, as it covers only unincorporated areas of Maricopa County.
