Mesa and Gilbert mayors will each host joint town hall meetings this week with Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon.
The events are designed to give the community a chance to ask local and federal lawmakers questions about any number of issues.
Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said it’s an opportunity to marry federal and local issues.
“When you talk about finances, when you talk about the relationship between the federal government, the cities, issues that are important to both of us like (Phoenix-Mesa) Gateway Airport, the federal government has a day-to-day impact on cities,” Smith said.
In Gilbert, Mayor John Lewis expects to give an update on progress of current Gilbert projects, too.
“I’m guessing since Congressman Salmon will be there, it may be more focused on the federal issues and concerns, but there will be time (for addressing local questions),” Lewis said. “The more coordination that occurs between the federal, state and local leaders, the better the result from the government perspective.”
Lewis said he expects the Gilbert event, to be hosted by Trilogy at Power Ranch, to be well attended.
“I anticipate there will be a group there that will be engaged.”
“Just come prepared to have a good interaction. (Salmon) is always ready and willing to have an active discussion with his constituents, and I am similar,” Smith said. “It’s a real opportunity to ask the questions that are important to you and to get straight answers.”
The joint town hall with Mesa’s Smith will be held 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Sunland Springs Village, 2820 S. Springwood Blvd., Mesa.
Gilbert’s Lewis will host Salmon 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the San Tan Clubhouse at Trilogy at Power Ranch, 4369 E. Village Parkway, Gilbert.
