Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will travel to the Republican National Convention next week to join the elephants -- literally.
Arpaio will speak to delegates from Western states at a reception at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Florida -- and the event will include elephants, the GOP symbol for more than a century.
The Aug. 30 reception is an invitation-only event.
“Sheriff Joe is a good friend and a great Republican, a former member of the Electoral College representing Arizona, and he’s wildly popular not just in Maricopa County but throughout the state and the country,” said Tom Morrissey, chairman of the Arizona Republican Party. “He’s done a lot for the Republican Party already and we’re overjoyed that as always he is willing to join us as we visit some of our ‘fellow elephants’ while in Tampa.”

Will Joe recall that he's supposed to be there? He does have well known memory issues after all. As a county employee, I hope he's noting this trip as vacation time, as the taxpayers should not be funding this. I wonder how much vacation time he has left this year! Is the RNC paying for his county protection detail that will also be on the trip?
