Groups plan own suit against immigration law
Singer Linda Ronstadt said Thursday that new legislation aimed
at illegal immigrants is bad for the state as a whole. The Tucson
native said her brother, Peter, who was police chief in that
community, told her this legislation undermines the trust that
needs to occur between officers and the community. Behind her is
Richard Chavez, brother of civil rights leader Cesar Chavez.

At least two lawsuits have already been filed in federal courts
in Arizona to challenge the state's new law cracking down on
illegal immigration, but three national organizations say they plan
one of their own.
Officials of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Mexican
American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the National
Immigration Law Center held a news conference at the State Capitol
Thursday to announce their planned lawsuit.
Singer and Tucson native Linda Ronstadt was on hand to denounce
the law, saying "Mexican-Americans are not going to take this lying
down."
MALDEF President Thomas Saenz said many Latinos fear
implementation of the law but that the legal challenge provides
reason for optimism.
