TUCSON - Sheriff's deputies in Pima County say a man wanted in connection with the sexual assault and slaying of an 81-year-old Tucson woman in May has been arrested in California.

John Vincent Nitzke was arrested Tuesday morning by police in Santa Monica after they responded to a trespassing report.

Deputy Dawn Hanke says Dorothy Carras was found slain in her north Tucson home on May 23. Hanke says DNA evidence found at scene linked Nitzke to the crime.

Homicide detectives are traveling to Southern California to meet with detectives there. Nitzke is being held pending extradition.

Carras was a retired nurse who kept active as a volunteer in the wellness ministry at the Casas Adobes Congregational United Church of Christ.
